Education & Training

I have over 20 years of clinical experience serving the needs of adults and couples. I have also spent over a decade teaching and training clinicians and academics on clinical matters. From 2015 to 2016 I was core faculty in the Human Sexuality doctoral program at California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), after which I was appointed Dean of the School of Professional Psychology and Health, also at CIIS. During this appointment I oversaw six clinical training degree programs, the department of field placement and six training clinics serving more than 2,000 San Franciscans each year with their mental health needs. I stepped down from this role in 2019 to pursue additional in-depth training in contemporary psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC).

Prior to training at PINC, I received a PhD in psychology from Saybrook University in 2015. My Master’s in Counseling Psychology was earned at the Professional School of Psychology, in Sacramento, CA in 2001. Internships and training thereafter included a year each at: The West Coast Center for Social Therapy, New Perspectives Center for Therapy, San Francisco Suicide Prevention, and the San Francisco Public School District. Prior to this, I spent a decade as VP of a marketing research and consulting agency serving clients in the tech sector, and the banking sector, and 5 years as a public middle school mathematics teacher. I also hold an EdM from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education in Teaching and Curriculum. As an undergraduate, I studied Psychology and Mathematics at the University of Oregon.

Technology & The Mind Podcast

Technology and the Mind is a podcast dedicated to exploring contemporary psychoanalytic ideas applied to consumer technology use cases. Each month I interview a seasoned practicing psychoanalyst about how they understand the impact of technology on our minds, our relationships and on society and how they predict technology and our minds may be mutually influenced by one another in the future—all from the perspective of contemporary psychoanalysis.

I have written two books, based on my dissertation research and subsequent studies of the clinical treatment of infidelity and ethics and several academic articles on topics as wide-ranging as: consent, mothering, and human decision making problems.
